The answer depends on the venue and room, but the ideal number of players for an escape room is 4-8 players. Read on to learn more about the answer to this popular (and somewhat complicated) frequently asked question.
Here's the breakdown::: Every escape room venue typically lists on their website how many players are recommended for each of their rooms. Most escape rooms will let you play with between 2-12 players. We've played with 2 and we've played with 12, so let's break down the pros and cons of team sizes in escape rooms!
2-3 player escape room team
Pros: More puzzle-y goodness for yourself, less to share with a team! Both players get to see the puzzles as they're being solved, because there are only two of you!
Cons: Less minds to solve the puzzles can sometimes mean a lower chance of escaping! Also, if you are booking a public escape room, 2 player games are almost always paired with strangers (shameless plug, Inferno Escape Room bookings are always private.)
Pro tip: not recommended if you're an escape room "newbie" (5 games or less).
4-8 player escape room team
Pros: More friends equals more fun, and playing with more people definitely makes this a more social game. Also, more friends equals more puzzle-solving brain juice and therefore a better chance of winning the escape game!
Cons: With a larger group, sometimes smaller groups are working on different puzzles simultaneously, so you may miss a puzzle or two that someone else in the room solves.
Pro tip: recommended team size if you've played 5 games or less.
9+ player team
Be wary of a 9+ player game, especially if it is public booking (i.e. you'll be paired with strangers). With 9 or more players, there often isn't enough space (personal bubble, thank-you-very-much). Even more importantly, more than 9 players often just becomes overwhelming because it's too many people communicating at once. It can be difficult to get everyone on the same page, and because of this even simple clues can be overlooked.
Pro tip: we would never recommend more than 10 people in one escape room.
